Deadstock

Overview

Deadstock is a contemporary quarterly magazine that focuses on the fashion. The problem is how do you create a fashion magazine with competitors in the category that have been doing it for years. The solution was found within the gap in the market. Deadstock does two things that separates itself and that is that it is more focused on the growing streetwear/designer hybrid side of fashion as well as tells the stories of these designers. The magazine focuses on unique products you would see out in the streets of places such as New York as well as the design process that went into these products. The goal of the imagery is to gain interest and spread the news of what has come out since the last issue while the goal of the written content is to inform readers about how the product came to be.

Market Research

When the goal of creating a magazine came to mind I knew that the most successful attempt would come with filling a gap in the market that I knew about, so that is exactly what I did. Fashion magazines will usually focus on anything that is popular on the scene, so my approach was to create a magazine that would focus on unique products. The other thing I found through research is that many of the magazines don’t focus into  creation of the product and the designer who made it.

Flat Plan + Layout

Pacing is a huge part of how I design everything. I learned alot from editing short videos that the pace needs to fast enough to gain your attention, but have slow moments for when you want the audience to retain what they are watching. Of course this is applied differently in print media, but the idea still stands. This grid system was adapted for this flexible pace and designed for multiple widths of body copy.

Cover Design

I was inspired by a talk from Gail Bichler in which she stated that an exercise she gives the writing team is, “tell me the main part of the story in one sentence.” Once I understood that my feature story was about Homer finally being released, I could conceptualize the idea for the cover. The link between the flowers and jewlery comes straight from the article in which the creator compares colors he uses to flowers. I then had a (replica) pendent from the brand that I was able to use for my own photoshoot.
